How to Decide Which Content Should Be Free vs Paid
Membership websites come in all shapes and sizes; but the type we typically deal with here at The Membership Guys consist primarily of content and community.
Given that content marketing is, without doubt, one of the best ways to promote your membership site; then it can be a real challenge trying to figure out which content should be free – via blogs, podcasts and the like – and which content should comprise your paid membership.
In this episode of The Membership Guys Podcast, I tackle this subject and look at some of the things to consider when deciding whether your content should be free or paid…
- The truth behind the notion that membership site owners are selling content (spoiler: that’s NOT what you’re selling!)
- Some of the obvious differences between free and paid content
- 5 questions to ask yourself to help determine whether a piece of content should be free or should be paid
- Why membership owners often overlook the importance of c________e (listen in to fill the blank!)
There is no real right or wrong answer here – it very much depends on your topic, your audience and the nature of your membership site; however hopefully this episode of The Membership Guys Podcast has given you a little more food for thought, and has enabled you to approach the question of whether to make content free or paid from a different angle.
“As a membership site owner, you’re not selling content. You’re selling solutions to a problem. Now, that solution may involve content. It may involve courses, videos, downloads and so on – but all of that is just a conduit through which you provide the solution to a problem.”
“If you are providing – through your content -a solution that is going to double the household income of one of your members, then obviously that’s gonna be worth far more to them, than if the problem you’re solving is simply, ‘how to pick out the right dress for the next business meeting’ – something which, by comparison, is worlds apart in value.”
“An 800 word article will usually not be a full solution. You’re giving people a glimpse of the solution, you’re teasing them with it. And typically, you’d have something far more comprehensive locked away inside your membership site.”
